For over 2 years, 24/7/365, this flag has hung from my porch, and it will stay there until our troops return from Iraq in enough numbers. I don't know what "enough" is yet....

 

It is patient --

Still, stoic,

Standing silent.

Biding its time.

It is restless --

Back and forth,

Flip-flap up/down,

Its murmurs sail the winds.

 

Hanging from my porch,

Nothing wrapped in it,

Nobody worshipping it --

It is what you make of it.

 

Is it soaking in Fear?

Let us dry it with Courage.

Is it torn up with Violence?

Let us sow it with Peace.

Is it burning in Anger?

Let us douse it with Reason.

Is it stained with our Arrogance?

Let us scrub with Respect.
