San Brizio (New) chapel with Signorelli frescos, Orvieto cathedral...........
Passing inside was a contrasting quietude, a coolness, and a simplicity of wooden roof trusses proceeding forward in on-off rhythm matching the on-off horizontal banding of the stonework. No clutter. Soft golden illumination came from veined alabaster windows complementing stained-glass --- wonderful with the sun. The abstraction of the glowing alabaster patterns was both modern and ancient.
There were no pews, just clear volume of space, polished red-stone floor, architecture and light. And at the east end the famous wall frescos recently revived. But the greatest were the frescos in the south-side San Brizio Chapel ---restoration completed. These were primarily by Luca Signorelli who had studied under Piero della Francesca. In dramatic composition they display a narrative of secular human action, often in torment as in his Apocalypse scenes.
This work was so powerful that it deeply inspired Michelangelo.........
