Rct. Travis T. King, Platoon 2081, Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, breaks the seal on his gas mask while in the gas chamber Sept. 1, 2015, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits experience temporary respiratory irritation, watery eyes and a burning sensation on the skin when exposed to the gas. King, 20, from Wilmington, N.C., is scheduled to graduate Oct. 23, 2015. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
