Kaiserliche Marine in China - 1898-1914

In order to establish more colonies, the German Empire was interested in territory on China. Eventually, a lease of the Kiautschou Bay was agreed on with Imperial China, starting 1898. With the outbreak of WWI, the area was quickly liberated by the Japanese.
Covering an area of 552 km2 (213 sq mi), it was located around Jiaozhou (also know as Kiaochow, Kiauchau, Kiao-Chau, Kiautschou or Kiaochau in different languages. The administrative center was at Tsingtau.
During the anti-Christian Boxer rebellion of 1889-1901, the Germans took advantage of the situation to deploy an occupational force in the area.
