Finally some snow!

by overflow50

Since the last update we have had a couple of snowfalls (20-30cm 4 days ago followed by 10cm last night), which has made a really welcome change. There have been lots of fresh tracks to but unfortunately the first fall was very fluffy powder which was pretty hard to ski over the refrozen tracked mank underneath, pretty much every turn you would be scraping along on the ice underneath (even on the big skis!). Still once the clouds lifted we got some great skiing in, although most of the time it was pretty low vis which took some of the fun out of it.

The total tally for the first dump was 3 great days skiing, many completely untracked runs (most people don’t seem to leave the pistes for some reason), 3 core shots in my Kuros and I got sluffed twice!

Being sluffed is a pretty weird experience, one minute you are happily skiing along the next your feet vanish out from under you and you are sliding down the hill in a great mass of snow! Nothing too scary since the terrain I was in was not steep enough for long enough to cause any real issues with avalanches but it was a good reminder that we need to play it safe for a few days to let the fresh snow settle down.

After a rest day yesterday and a top up of snow over night Georgia and I headed back up to Brevent to see if we could get some more fresh tracks. Unfortunately the skiing was difficult to say the least, the last snow fall was pretty warm and heavy (sleeting by the end) which made the skiing off piste exceptionally hard, there are at least 3 distinct layers, wet snow on top, then a suncrust and finally the ice underneath…bloody hard work! And as you can see from the photos the stability is still not what we were hoping for! I kicked off a little slab while traversing into some untracked snow.

Otherwise we are both doing well and looking forward to the next snowfall which should come through on the weekend.
