168/365 Goodbye SX

This is an SX professional development board from Parallax. The SX is, or rather was, a microcontroller which could be programmed to do a variety of tasks. I say ‘was’ as having dug it out and dusted it off I have discovered that since I last played with it the product has been declared end of life. That rather kills off my hopes of finding new interface software as in the interim I have also swapped from Windows to Apple Mac meaning the original development software is no longer suitable. The new Propeller chip from Parallax looks quite interesting, the first time I have seen a multi-core microcontroller, so I think it might be time to upgrade. At least most of the peripherals on the development board will still be of use with a new chip.

My interest in microcontrollers goes back to my university days when we were required to use them for various control system and robotics projects. I haven’t played properly with one for a while but I reckon I can feel a new project coming on. All I have to do is find some time…

Three lights were used for this shot. The first is suspended overhead using the boom I acquired yesterday, although this time fitted with a 90cm shoot-through umbrella rather than the softbox as control of spill was less of an issue. A second light was set at 90 degrees to camera left and low down to provide some directional side lighting. The third is to the right of the frame, pointed at the wall behind the image and is generating the specular highlights on the flat surfaces. You can see a shot of the lighting setup here if you are interested.
