The Devereuxs owned a large tract of land to the west of the Mordecai plantation. The Mordecai and Devereux families intermarried and were among Raleigh’s wealthiest during the ante bellum period. The Devereux homeplace seen here was demolished ca. 1900, and the Glenwood neighborhood developed on the site.
