Questionable stopharia
Stopharia ambigua or questionable stopharia is a very common mushroom in this area because they thrive on wood chips. Most public works crews (city, county, state) in California chip up tree debris and brush and leave or spread the chips nearby. While other mushrooms like the accelerated decaying wood, in my experience, Stopharia is the most common in the Sierra Nevada region. Stopharia makes a dark gray spore print (meaning the underside or gills are grey to dark gray). Another signature is the white fringe on the young caps which is remnants from the veil.
