"Spirit of San Francisco"- Civic Center Moonrise Alignment

Happy Halloween. I started a new series called, "Whimsical Moon" where I use TPE coordinates of the moonrise and moonsets to align it with iconic and interesting structures. Been planning this shot for months and almost forgot, if it weren't for me setting like 5 reminders on my iphone's calendar. Turns out it worked out perfectly and couldn't be happier.

In order to get this shot perfectly aligned I had to take some risks. I was standing in the middle of the road with cars whooshing by me on both sides. Had my fair share of haters and people basically telling me to get the heck outta the way. But, when people realized that I wasn't going anywhere and saw what I was doing, they were in awe and pulling over. Next thing you knew I had like 20 people around me taking snapshots with their iPhones and a couple foreigners who had DSLR's but no tripods.

My ultimate goal as a photographer is to of course take epic, awe inspiring shots, but to also be UNIQUE. That's what drives me and wakes me up everyday, especially with living in a city with many iconic landmarks and photographers who have shot them in every angle millions upon millions of times.

However, I've never seen any shots that anyone has ever taken with the moonrise perfectly lined up with the Civic Center dome or any shots for that matter with the moon behind it.

I chose this street of course because of the alignment but also how awesome the lead in is with the cars and depth of looking down this steep incline. It also reminds me of the Capitol of Washington DC, so I had to get this shot.

Having the Civic Center lit up orange for the spirit of Giants and San Francisco support of them is also unique timing and brings the San Francisco spirit to the shot. With all that done, they actually won!! And with us now in the Fall season and Halloween today and the color theme and all, I couldn't be happier with how this turned out.

This was shot with:

Nikon D810 w/ Nikkor 70-200 f/4 lens

Two shot blend. One for moon. One for light trails. Didn't change composition or focal length to make moon bigger. Waited for the moon to line up perfectly and took shot. Then kept same position/comp. and did a longer exposure for light trails of 30secs.

Hope you enjoy my photography!
