National War Memorial, Confederation Square, Ottawa, Ontario
A view of Canada's National War Memorial located in Confederation Square and near Parliament Hill. Seen behind the memorial is the Fairmont Château Laurier, a grand railroad hotel built in the early twentieth century.
The granite arch with bronze sculptures was designed by sculpture Vernon March (1891-1930), and first dedicated by King George VI in 1939. Originally built to honor the Canadians who died in World War I, the memorial was rededicated in 1982 to include those killed in World War II and the Korean War. In 2014, the memorial once again was rededicated to include the War in Afghanistan, the Second Boer War, as well as all Canadians killed in conflicts past and future.
Seen in the bottom right of this photograph is the Canadian Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. At the foot of the tomb are two members of the Ceremonial Guard, which are drawn from all branches of the Canadian Forces.
