Give a man a fish...
“Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” Chinese proverb
I was recently in Stokholm and visited the Nobel Museum in the Gamla Stan area of the city. All the Nobel Prize winners are honoured in the museum and one can obtain information about them from touch screen computers.
This photograph is a screenshot from one of the touchscreen computers in the museum. It shows a Nobel prize winner who is of particular interest to me: Prof. Muhammad Yunus. He obtained the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 (jointly with Grameen bank which he founded in 1983) for his work on microfinancing and helping the poor in Bangladesh to help themselves. The proverb mentioned at the start embodies this philosophy.
Prof Yunus was born in Chittagong, studied at Chittagong College, graduated in Economics from Dhaka University and obtained a PhD from Vanderbilt University, USA. Apart from the Nobel prize, he has also received numerous other International honours including the Presidential Medal of Freedom which was awarded to him by Barack Obama in 2009.
It makes one proud to be Bangladeshi. However, the dirty politics of Bangladesh has to spoil everything :-( He was ousted from his position as head of Grameen bank by the BD government earlier this year.
