Tips & Needs for creating sustainable community living

The Franklin's Tower cooperative reflects on the practices with which a family-sized, well-organized community of Stanford students was built. What were the ingredients of resounding success? Where was there room for improvement?

Knowing the balance between formal and informal organization, e.g. finance accounting (formal), chore scheduling (informal)

 

Past cooperative living experience helped.

 

Role differentiation: members had nicely complementary individual dispositions towards community roles and responsibilities.

 

People took the initiative to act: clean, rag laundry, compost, fridge clean, recycling, landlord communication.

 

Intentional planning at the start to build "community."

 

Regular hosting of public meals -- expands the community through social networks and affinity.
