Cocos Sailing

This was taken about 1983 at the annual Cocos Island Race. Cocos Isl is a small island off the southern tip of Guam separated from the mainland by about 1-2Km.

It was the time of the annual sailboard race, and there were about 50 participants, and I was in a rubber boat with my professional photographer friend, who wanted to take pictures looking up while the boards went over the top of him as they rounded a buoy.

The water was only about a few metres deep. When he slipped over the side with his dive gear on, his flippers hooked on to a rope in the boat and the rope quickly spread out in the water and my heart was in my mouth as the race went over the top.

I thought if a board hooks the rope and the race collapses, we are in deep . . . . .

Taken on Kodachrome ASA100 slide film with Canon F1.

It was a perfectly sunny day and I have played with this a bit and liked the rather bold look of the colour rendition.
