Az idős és mozogni és már csak tolókocsival képes Oscar Peterson egyik utolsó koncertjére mentem el Mississauga-ban, Ontario, Kanada. Peterson itt élt ebben a Torontóval egybeépült kertvárosban, és annak tiszteletére lépett fel, hogy az iskolát róla nevezték el. Volt ugyan egy szerény belépődíj, de az esemény nem kapott túl nagy nyilvánosságot, így kényelmesen odamehettem a mesterhez a rövid tornatermi koncert után és kértem, hogy írja alá a tájékoztató brossúrát. Soha nem felejtem el, ahogy a papírt átvéve kezet fogtam vele, megköszöntem, és minden jót kívántam neki - miközben mélyen a szemembe nézett, és úgy éreztem, hogy igazán emberszámba vett, ami hírességek között nagy szó!
I attended one of the last live performances of the great Oscar Peterson in 2005. He lived in Mississauga, ON, Canada until his death, this is where they named a public elementary school after him and he showed up at the one hour ceremony at the gym and gave a 20-30 minutes piano concert. There was not much crowd there, the ticket was also very reasonable (it probably all went to charity, for the school), so I could easily approach him after the show and ask for his autograph. I will never forget how honestly and deeply he looked up at me from his wheelchair and looked right into my eyes when I thanked him and got back the brossure, shaking his hand. What a great man!
