Autumn Solitude on the Mountainside

In addition to the visuals, a story immediately came to mind. It was even powerful enough to pull me away from building one night to write a couple pages before going to bed. I ended up using it as a short piece for my creative writing class as well.

10 October, 2017 – Day 148

Last night was quite frigid. The days certainly are getting shorter now, the nights longer – and colder. My little hut was great in the summer, but now the rock wall drains the heat as soon as the fire burns down. Tomorrow I will set about insulating. I just hope it is enough.

The other problem with these nights is entertaining myself once it gets too dark to work. What I wouldn’t give for another person to talk to! Gary the Owl talks a little after dark, but I think he talks to the moon, because he won’t make much conversation with me. The winter is going to be especially interesting that way – just less time per day to do the things that need doing. It’s funny, before all this, such things as cold weather and short days hardly mattered. Sure, I might complain about how long it took to warm up the car or shovel the walk, but it was all minor stuff. And when it got dark at six, you just flip a switch, and you have light again. I don’t exactly have that luxury now. It does make you appreciate the things society offered us - electricity, running water, prepared food, the basics. Now I can’t even store water by the hut because my keg froze up. I have to haul it from the creek every time I need it – and I worry the creek is going to freeze soon too.
