Pileated Woodpecker male eating berry

Pileated Woodpecker is seen regularly but not frequently in the Calgary area of southern Alberta, including in winter, so sightings are always welcome. This male (with red ‘cheek patch”) was feeding on berries on the day of the year with the least light, the winter solstice. It was also foraging for insects on fallen logs [see www.flickr.com/photos/luminouscompositions/54220006402/in... ], and for a while was being pestered by a Sharp-shinned Hawk [see www.flickr.com/photos/luminouscompositions/54220015917/in... ]. Eventually if flew west across the Bow River from where this image was taken in Carburn Park.
