Great Central Railway Loughborough Leicestershire 18th January 2009

An early start at 06.00am saw me cleaning the firebox and lighting up British Railways Standard 2 2-6-0 78019 in the darkness. By 08.30 there was a glow in the sky and just about enough light (with ISO3200). By this time we had moved onto the pit.

That jet of steam blowing from the smokebox side was from a leaking joint in the atomiser. On the road it and steam from a leaking piston rod gland made the view forward quite tricky. Not just on the fireman's side but also the driver's because the steam was carried over by the strong side wind.
