Pigeon Point Lighthouse - Star on the Pacific
Sadly due to the state of California's budget the lighting of the original Fresnel lens on the 135th anniversary was canceled for 2009. Hopefully it will return in 2010. This is one of the more spectacular sites you will see. The starburst pattern is natural as the lighthouse puts out 24 beams of light in all directions at once. This image was taken at the 2008 lighting on a crystal clear night. I also have pictures taken during foggy nights. Both are spectacular. The lighthouse sits about 40 miles south of San Francisco and 20 miles north of Santa Cruz on California's famous Highway One. The lighthouse is in a serious need of repair. A 200lb chunk of the lighthouse fell off the western side closing the structure to the public. A chain link fence was erected around the lighthouse making photography of this stunning structure difficult. Even so, it's by far the most impressive of California's lighthouses.
I recently reprocessed this photo using new software and the result was much improved. It has been reposted to some groups as a result.
