Carlsberg (Dk)

Classified in: “Explores that made us sweat”.

Meet the famous Carlsberg Brewery. It started to pop up in urbex fora around 2008 and soon became the Holy Grail of the North. A must see. It was fairly doable back in the days, and by 2011 most of the explorers had seen this beauty.

The year 2012 marks a shift. Interior pics became sparse, and exploring the off-limit parts of the brewery became a real challenge. We were told that a team of 5 security guys maintained the integrity of the place, doing interior and exterior patrols, day and night. 360° dome camera’s were installed on every single corner of every single building, and if you managed to find a flaw in the system, you were greeted with a regular camera pointing towards you. Someone did their homework, kuddos.

By the end of 2012 it was labeled undoable. And we still had to see her…

We decided to check up on security measures during daytime. The site is enormous and was in constant redevelopment. Carlsberg acts like a little mini-city within a city. It has its own rules, its own laws. Like a fortified city sprawling high walls and razor-wire fences. We knew it was hiding something precious! But the treasure trove didn’t have gold in it... it was copper. Massive amounts of copper, shaped in ten majestic kettles that once made delicious draft.

We bailed out on the daily. Only to return in the midst of the night, reinforced by one of DK’s finest: the great Lusker. The Man with the Plan, able to guide us through the vast underground network of tunnels, maintenance shafts and fire exits; whilst carefully navigating between motion sensors and hotwired doors. Our kinda guy!

After a 45 minute urban spelunking tour that just seemed endless, we finally arrived at the vault: the closed off grand hall featuring the copper kettles in mint condition. It was a hit and run, a 5 minute max mission. Tripods out, focus on infinity, and hoping the high-iso long exposure would result in “something” to bring home.

And then it happened - in the heat of the action - at 2 AM in the night: an infrared laser was pointing upon the kettles, making a reddish sphere. Out of nowhere. We hit the floor and silently packed our gear. The infrared show continued but we couldn’t see or hear anyone. Are we busted? What is that light?

We crawled near the window and peek-a-booed: the laser beam was originating from a residential block, outside the Carlsberg plant. It’s hard to imagine, but apparently at the wee hours of a Sunday morning some geeky person is dedicated to shine his laser pen right in the middle of the grand hall of an abandoned brewery, lighting up the place. The. Fuck.

We continued our remaining 30 seconds photographing tour, and bailed out. We’ve seen her.

Exiting this place was the icing on the cake: we escaped via the live plant, activating all there is to activate; alerting all there is to alert. And run. As fast as we could, as far as we could.

Great explore guys!
