Failed computational experiment for calculating the minimum distance between two ellipsoids
Author: Daniel Simões Lopes
Date: December 2009
Description: Attempt to compute the closest pair of points between a sphere and an ellipsoid. The code had, at the time, a bug that corrupted the predicted solution and, therefore, the numerical computations did not converge leading the algorithm to enter an infinite loop. Visualizing how the algorithm iterated in real-time gave an overall understanding of what was going wrong allowing, in this manner, to detect where the bug was located within the code. Each pair of green dots connected by a yellow line corresponds to a candidate solution of the formulated system of non-linear equations for minimum distance calculation.
Technique: Computer generated image.
