Wonder Dog: A bronze statue of Balto the Siberian Husky stands on a rocky outcrop near Willowdell Arch in Central Park, indisputedly one of the Park's most beloved statues. Balto is renowned for leading the last leg of a dog-sled relay to deliver diphtheria antitoxin to Nome, Alaska, where an outbreak threatened the inhabitants in January 1925. Twenty teams braved sub-zero temperatures and blizzard conditions to travel nearly 700 miles in five days, and their astounding journey was followed the world over. Balto himself attended his statue's dedication on December 17, 1925. He would also be celebrated years later in the 1995 animated movie "Balto."
