11th Century Church of the Annunciation / Santa Maria Annuziata de Catalania
For the last full day of our short break in Italy we headed 179Km south from San Nicola Arcela to the port of Villa San Giovanni, from where you can catch a ferry to Sicily. The Straits are a little over 5km wide at this point and high speed ferry takes around 20 minutes to make the crossing into Messina central district where it moors next to the train ferry berths. I would have liked to have used a train ferry, but the times would not have worked out for this visit.
Messina was already very hot - 40C - but the week after we left the Cerebus heat wave took it up to 47C! At least there are public water points dotted around the City and you can always pop into one of the delightfully cool cafes for an iced Granita!
