Reading Wheels On The Bus
The large window to the camera left bathed the room with a lovely soft light. That window light was supplemented by a lamp also off to camera left. With those sources bouncing around the room, a sort of classic Renaissance-like illumination was falling on this scene in which the child was being read his favourite book (one of many times doing so that day), ‘The Wheels On The Bus’ while cuddled up with Grandma. And, of course, the red sweater invoked the Red Rule - JW
Date Taken: 2019-02-08
Tech Details:
Taken using a hand-held Nikon D7100 fitted with an AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm lense set to 75mm, Daylight WB, ISO1600 (Auto ISO), Aperture priority mode, f/5.3, 1/30 sec. The SOOC JPEG file was near perfect to my taste so I did not bother with processing the RAW/NEF file. PP in free Open Source GIMP of SOOC JPEG source file: crop a bit of dead space off the right side of the frame, very slightly brighten the dark areas of the image using the tone curve tool by pinning a point about 20% to the right of the left side of the curve and pulling it up a little while holding the rest of the curve at default, use the dodge-burn tool and a small size brush to brighten only the highlights of the child’s eyes, clone out a small blemish on the child’s left cheek, select only the hair and eyes using the magic wand selection tool and sharpen only those areas (to minimize the impact on skin surfaces), save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 2048px wide, sharpen very slightly, save.
