Haley celebrates birthdays differently than most children since she can't come in contact with food. Her birthday cake is just as colorful as most, but it is made of plastic. Haley’s reaction to food starts a few hours after contact or ingesting, typically stating with hives, includes vomiting and diarrhea, intense pain, and can last for days or weeks. FPIES is not as common or mild as a peanut or lactose allergy.
