Bankruptcy-period Kmart spit out a mere five of these "green" prototype stores throughout Michigan and central Illinois. In addition to the splash of lime green paint, these stores apparently featured a reworked department layout with wider aisles, better lighting, lower shelves, and new logos. The town's name was marked at the entrance to each store. A full-scale rollout couldn't be implemented before Eddie Lampert entered the picture and said "fuck it".
The Peoria store - originally a Venture convert - was the last of these green prototypes to close. Its facade of grinning faces (the only one of these test stores adorned with them) remain to greet Kroger shoppers opposite of it in the Evergreen Square shopping center.
