Daniel
For a couple of months I followed the life of Daniel Fari. Daniel was born in Martinique and came to Europe about 10 years ago to find his luck in life. After being in prison for 2 years in Martinique, Daniel wanted to get away to do something else.
After my first meeting with Daniel he told me that he was 32 years old but a month later I had found out that he was actually 44 years old. Daniel Fari is also not his real name. Daniel is his nickname.
When Daniel moved to Europe he first lived in Paris for 7 years. Martinique is a overseas French department where the official language is also French. Except for the language French, Daniel speaks also fluently German. After 7 years Paris he moved to Prague for a little while and eventually ended up in Berlin. He lived there for 2 years working in a factory. Whenever he had made enough money Daniel would go to Amsterdam to smoke weed. These 10 years Daniel never had a real home so he was always sleeping on the streets. Daniel is not much of good player and he would rather not play music on the streets ever again. His Repertoire features just one song, actually one sentence that he will play over and over again. ''Sometimes people give me love, sometimes''. And if somebody would give him some money he would sing: ''Thank you for your love, thank you''. Singing is not the way to make money for Daniel because with his dreadlocks he is striking figure in the street. Tourists will stare at him and then Daniel will scream: ''PHOTO, PHOTO''. So after the picture people would give him money.
Because Daniel is homeless, it's really important to make money this way. Daniel has several sleeping places in the city and whenever he made enough money he would go to hostel. In the hostel he can take a good shower, sleep in a warm bed and wash is clothes.
Daniel is also really scared of the police. He got several fines for busking because he doesn't has a license. And because Daniel couldn't pay those fines he ended up in prison for 2 weeks. For Daniel these are big problems because he can't speak or read Dutch.
Mostly in the evening when Daniel is finished busking he would go to a coffee shop to smoke weed. For him it's the way to smoke the day away and forget all of the trouble around him.
