Wall Street & Ground Zero

The weather forecast predicted some good weather for a change, and since this July has been a hot, humid monster, with all too frequent destructive thunderstorms it yelled out to me, “Get out of the House”. And so I did, but then where to go. Last week it was up to the MET, and Central Park, so now it was time to head south to lower Manhattan and revisit some places, and get some (actually a lot) of walking exercise. We once again revisited places such as Stone Street, Fraunces Tavern, and a first stop at the “Elevated Acre”, actually a roof top park. A walk past one of the oldest NYPD Police Precincts (now closed) at 100 Old Slip, and then a walk on Wall Street from end to end. Wall Street ends at Broadway so a visit to the Trinity Church graveyard was in order, and then time for a lunch break at ground zero’s famous O’Hara’s Pub.

After lunch it was time to decide the next move, do we walk straight north or perhaps view some more of Ground Zero. We crossed Greenwich Street and walked around the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine and were surprised the door was open for visitors. I had wanted to see the inside of this church ever since it had been reopened after being destroyed by the 911 events. I went inside and simply in one word, “magnificent”, and was the highlight of this journey. The building is made up of white marble which simply glistens in the sunlight, and this is carried over into the interior. Although not a large church, it is however filled with sunlight which passes through its domed ceiling. The walls and center of the dome are filled with beautiful orthodox paintings using a pallet of colors that accentuate the brightness of the white marble. This church is something not to be missed when at ground Zero. One often thinks of churches as dark places filled with carvings and stained glass, but here one gets a sense of optimism, hope, and brightness.

Across West Street was Brookfield Place and the Winter Garden, and then the walk north along the Battery Park City Esplanade, Hudson River Park, and finally the High Line and Penn Station. We got to Penn Station with a train leaving for home in just six minutes, so it was down to the departure track ASAP, and finally able relax on the way home!
