Exa 500

Introduced in 1966 by Ihagee, the 500 was the last of the Exa line. Like its forebears the shutter release is on the left on the front face. The lens diaphragm is stopped down to whatever pre-set is selected by depressing the lever seen to the right of the lens (DoF preview). Pressing it further makes contact with the shutter release to fire the shutter. All of which means that viewing is at max aperture. This lens is the Meyer Optik Domiplan 50 mm f 2.8, which found its way on to many DDR manufactured 35 mm SLRs, although the vastly superior Zeiss 2.8 Tessar was usually an optional improvement. The lens mount is the Exakta bayonet fitting and, on this example, seems rather rough in operation. Shutter speeds are 1/2 to 1/500 sec & B the dial is located around the rewind crank. For many years the system available to this camera was by a long way the most comprehensive available anywhere in the world.
