Birthday Self-portrait 2006
That's right...today I turn 36. I am now in my late 30's. I'm already beginning to feel the need to have a mid-life crisis, divorce, shack up with a hot 20-year-old, and crash my Ferrari on the Gardiner Expressway...too bad I'm not married, have ethics but no driver's license (or money).
I have not learned much, but what I know about life, I now share with you:
Murphy was an optimist.
Never kiss a woman shorter than you on the exact center of her head (trust me).
It doesn’t matter where you go...there you are. (Buckaroo Banzai)
Static electricity is powerful and if left unchecked, can wreak havoc. Therefore, hack naked.
Friends come and go; enemies accumulate.
If it jams — force it. If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.
One of the satisfactions of being a Canadian is that one is not expected to be a good example.
Robertson Davies
Watch me.
Pierre Eliot Trudeau
People who read Cosmopolitan magazine are very different from those who do not.
Donald Berry, Statistics: A Bayesian Perspective
O no, she said, you can’t say just any old thing to the Wind. Only the Deepest Secrets will do and also you must not use the letter i
Brian Andreas
There was preserved within her the fresh miracle of surprise.
Jim Morrison
It’s fun to have people angry at you.
Philip Glass
Real artists ship.
Steve Jobs
Comics are just words and pictures. You can do anything with words and pictures.
Harvey Pekar
There are no opposing camps; there is no struggle. Each writer is a one-man camp, unallied and unarmed, a lone bivouac under heaven.
Annie Dillard
There is no reciprocity. Men love women, women love children, children love hamsters.
Alice Thomas Ellis
Cloquet hated reality but realized it was still the only place to get a good steak.
Woody Allen
We are all born charming, fresh, and sponteneous and must be civilized before we are fit to participate in society.
Miss Manners (Judith Martin)
Where I was born and where and how I have lived is unimportant. It is what I have done with where I have been that should be of interest.
Georgia O’Keefe
She drops into his arms, held out stern as a schooldesk. He walks then, he dances with the wheat in his hands. When he was twelve he turned the pages always towards illustration and saw the heroes carry the woman across British Columbian streams, across the foot of waterfalls. And now her hand above her eyes shielding out the sun. Her shirt on her lap. He has come across a love story. This is only a love story. He does not wish for plot and all its consequences. Let me stay in this field with Alice Gull…
Michael Ondaatje, In the Skin of a Lion
Always, I am amazed at what we tell, how much faith we put in it. Never really knowing who is listening, how they’re going to take it, where.
Bronwen Wallace
In a big country dreams stay with you like a lovers cry past the mountain side…
Big Country
Solvitur Ambulando — It is solved by walking.
Moorish proverb
I think it would be well, and proper, and obedient, and pure, to grasp your one necessity and not let it go, to dangle from it limp wherever it takes you. Then even death, where you’re going no matter how you live, cannot you part. Seize it and let it seize you up aloft even, till your eyes burn out and drop; let your musky flesh fall off in shreds, and let your very bones unhinge and scatter, loosened over fields and woods, lightly, thoughtless, from any height at all, from as high as eagles.
Annie Dillard
I reread the above and confirm the fact — with a certain bittersweet melancholy — that everything in the world brings me back to a quotation or a book.
J. L. Borges
