Sehdev

I am fortunate to be a student at the LIFE Institute, an adult education not-for-profit branch of Ryerson Univesity. LIFE offers a wide variety of courses for retired people. Professor Kumar teaches one of the courses I'm taking. It has the expansive title "The Human Journey Over The Past 10,000 Years." It takes a special kind of lecturer to take on a topic that broad and do it in eight, two hour fascinating lectures.

Professor Emeritus Kumar is an academic with many interests and an exceptionally diverse knowledge base. He came to the University of Toronto on scholarship at age 21 from his native India to study physics.. His interests soon broadened to encompass the humanities and and he has spent much of his life exploring, teaching, and writing about the many dimensions of the human experience. He publishes a weekly newspaper column and teaches adult education courses on a variety of topics at several universities in Canada and India. It is a gift to have such mastery of a wide range of material but to have a talent for presenting it in an interesting and engaging way is a different kind of gift. Professor Kumar is a lecturer who combines both these qualities.

I am a volunteer assistant in his "Human Journey" course and during today's lecture "Nature versus Nurture" I became more and more intrigued by the thought of photographing him in an effort to capture some of his wisdom, gentle warmth, and humanism in an informal portrait or two. He was more than happy to pose for a few photos in the hallway following today's class. I hope some of his personality comes through in these photos.

A note on the hat: Today Sehdev wore a beautiful traditional woven hat to class. I expressed interest in it before class and suggested he talk a bit about it at the start of today's lecture. He explained it comes from the northern "Himalayan" region of India and does not carry religious significance but is worn for warmth. Today was the first frigid winter day in Toronto with snow on the ground so I can understand it coming out of his closet today.
