GN SD9s pulling ore from the Mesabi Iron Range
It's April 30, 1970 and the Burlington Northern Railroad was two months old when James L. Jeffrey snapped this photo. According to Jim, he took this shot on a trip from Kent Ohio to record the Duluth area railroads with his friend Rod Peterson. It's a marvelous view and we're so happy to be able to share it with you as it shows Great Northern EMD SD9s 577 and 573 still wearing the full GN paint jobs and numbers. The venerable locomotives are lugging a string of iron ore loads back to Kelly Lake, Minnesota after setting out a string of MTYs that will be spotted for loading at one of the many ore mines located on the western end of the great Mesabi Range. I'm looking forward to sharing more of Jim's work as it relates to the ore business and the great Mesabi Range.
