FOW Tour - Mount St Joseph

by jcsullivan24

This tour was of the Holloway Mansion house. We also toured the Sisters of St. Joseph Mother House in May, as part of our Preservation Awards dinner meeting. The mansion was the home of W. W. Holloway (1886-1969) and his wife Margaret (daughter of Alexander Glass). Yale graduate Holloway was actively involved in the area’s steel industry and became president of Wheeling Steel in 1927. He expanded an 1854 farmhouse by adding two extensive wings and other architectural details, resulting in the Italian Renaissance Revival mansion that stands today. Holloway’s former Yale classmate, William Wayne, was the architect, and renowned Wheeling builder Ralph Kitchen did the custom woodwork. Years-long construction was finished in 1926, and the Holloways lived in the home until they sold it to the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1954. It now serves as a retreat center and is listed on the National Register.
