HMS Warrior

HMS Warrior 1860 is a ship exhibited at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. It was the first ship built of iron and was at the time the largest, fastest and most powerful ship in the world, once described by the French Emperor as "The Black Snake". It was built in response to when the French began to armour their ships with iron, and instead of firing cannonballs, it used shells which could penetrate iron ships. It also used steam power for maneuvering although it still used sails for long-distance travelling.

This lead to a fast advance in Naval warships and soon there were much larger ships which didn't use sails at all. HMS Warrior soon became obsolete and ended up being used for training, before finally ending up almost forgotten in Milford Haven.

Eventually, the ship was found, restored and taken to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard where it is a tourist attract which many people visit to look around.

This is one of lots of photos taken while Linda from South Carolina was in town!
