Waitangi Day

Or 'your unpronounceable holiday' as one of my English friends described it. It's not difficult. Why Tang Ee. Waitangi.

1. I started the day with the traditional public holiday thing for home owners, doing some maintenance, tying up the clematis. There is a gorgeous clematis plant growing across the front of the garage. It needed to be pinned back. Although I am at home during the week I did not want to get up on a ladder on the steep drive while there was nobody else home, just in case I fell.

2. It is also the day of the NFL Super Bowl. Well, in the USA, where it is being played, it is Sunday evening but here in NZ we 'live in the future'. Rik is a fan and is pleased that this year it coincides with a public holiday so he can be home and watch it live. One of our American friends, Dave, came over to watch it with him and with Joe. I have no interest in the football so left the guys to enjoy the game, their beers and some chips'n'dips while I set about using the BBQ for the first time. It's been used before, but not by me. Joe, who had made some delicious meatballs, wandered out to help me.

3. One of the things I cooked on the barbie was corn on the cob. I love how fresh it is here.

4. When we were at the supermarket yesterday Rik suggested we buy a 'pav' (a pavlova) for today. As I had no time to make one (and very little experience of it, and that a long time ago) I thought this a great idea. It is, after, the traditional kiwi dessert. I served it with some defrosted berries and whipped cream.

A year ago today I had thank you gifts from a Swiss couchsurfer.
