Worksop East

The closed Worksop East signal box located by the Down Main line alongside Carlton Road level crossing. Friday 24th January 2014

Worksop Station signal box was a Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway Company type 2 design fitted with a Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway Company Tappet lever frame that opened during the 1880s. It was renamed Worksop East, possibly around the start of the 20th century and the lever frame, which was originally circa 22 levers was extended to 33 levers at some time. The level crossing gates were replaced by lifting barriers on 17th-18th December 1972 and a second hand 20 lever McKenzie & Holland Cam & Tappet Number 13 frame, moved from Sleaford Junction signal box, was installed on 16th February 1975 complete with new tappet locking. The signal box was awarded Grade II listed building status on 19th May 1986 and was reduced to a non block post controlling the adjacent level crossing only on 16th August 1998 when signalling passed to Worksop signal box. It was closed on 10th October 1999 when the level crossing was converted to a CCTv level crossing controlled by Worksop signal box and after closure was retained to control level crossing barriers in an emergency

The signal box carries a British Rail corporate identity printed design nameplate
