Teeth inside agitator "auger"

Repairing the agitator in my 1994 (!) Whirlpool clothes washer, model number LSC8244BQ0.

Here's a view from the top, looking down into the upper part of the agitator, also known as the "agitator auger."

You can see teeth molded in a ring around the inside of the agitator auger near the bottom. These are the teeth with which the agitator cogs can engage in one direction, but not the other.

WARNING: Always disconnect the power to the washer by removing its electrical plug from the wall socket BEFORE starting to work. Do not reconnect the power unit the repair and all re-assembly is complete.
