#BlackHistoryMonth: Before overcoming major societal barriers to become Georgetown University's first African-American undergraduate student in 1950, Samuel A. Halsey Jr. (F'53) served in the US Army in WWII. He would go on to earn his accounting degree on the Hilltop before joining the Air Force and earning the rank of Colonel. In 2002, the university created a citizenship award in Halsey's name to celebrate the accomplishments of a notable Black Georgetown graduate each year.
