WINNER BIG NATIVE TREE - CHRIS SOBEY, HOWLONG - S2S Big Tree Competition 2015
RIVER RED GUM - HOWLONG - 1155cm circumference at 1.3m above ground
"I found this tree when on duty as a WIRES rep during the widening of the Howlong to Victoria road. I managed to prevent the felling of two big old gums, pruning them back instead. This part of the roadworks took nearly a week - was only able to help a few possums stunned in fall - no Koalas present. I took a walk one lunch break across a paddock on the 'island' on the eastern side of the road up to the billabong where I came across this monster tree. The Border Mail came for a photo and I have an enlarged copy on the wall at home.
Note: Scanned version of a photo by Simon Dallinger provided by entrant.
