Clashes
I stayed behind in the camp when the others went on the marches, and so it was that i was nearby when the big march, having doubled back on itself, broke into the field behind the camp with a huge cheer, forcing the mounted cops to retreat in disarray. The protestors poured through a gap in the hedge and into a field of dry, brittle oilseed rape, on the other side of which was the road behind BAA. The handful of cops in the field looked about to be overwhelmed by the crowd, and immediately responded with violence.
None of the protestors were armed or violent, although some had fashioned shields to ward off trunctions. The police waded in amongst the vanguard, grabbing people and throwing them to the floor and aiming trunction blows at heads and limbs. Although there was clearly no chance of them driving back the tide, at this point it looked as though there were going to be a great number of significant injuries amongst the protestors.
In august 2007, people from all over the UK gathered to protest plans to add a third runway to heathrow airport. Heathrow already produces more CO2 than most countries, and adding more flights at a time when climate change threatens the entire planet is nothing short of madness.
We were joined by locals from the village of Sipson, which is due to disapear under the new runway, with little compensation or consideration for the displaced residents.
