In the Spotlight
The camp itself was run entirely on renewable energy, or often without energy at all where possible. I'm pretty sure we were nearly, if not completely, carbon-neutral for the whole week. And then the cops, despite our protests, went and ruined it by driving around in loads of vans, having a chopper overhead most of the time, and placing huge floodlights at the entrance to the camp, often running all day as well as all night, with two horrible noisy petrol generators.
On a technical note, the two banners at the front of the camp were actually facing the spotlights on the road. In order to get this shot, I took a photo from behind the banners - with the text still clearly legible due to the bright light and the materials used - and then flipped it digitally to get the text back the right way round.
In august 2007, people from all over the UK gathered to protest plans to add a third runway to heathrow airport. Heathrow already produces more CO2 than most countries, and adding more flights at a time when climate change threatens the entire planet is nothing short of madness.
We were joined by locals from the village of Sipson, which is due to disapear under the new runway, with little compensation or consideration for the displaced residents.
