Damn Journalists

There was a media hour each day when reporters and photographers were invited to come on site and wander round with an escort and talk to people who wanted to be talked to and photograph people who wanted to photograph. But of course this isn't enough for the mainstream media, who think they have some god-given right to harrass the hell out of people whenever they please.

The guy on the right works for the Daily Mail, who I seem to recall being one of the first papers to ban paparazi photography after they killed princess Di ten years ago. And yet there he was, standing outside the camp with a zoom lens taking photos of people's faces as they tried to go about their business. A group of us went and had words with him, and he denied having any responsibility for the fact that the paper he collaborates with and supplies with photos is a right-wing gutter rag with all the credibility of Peter Madnelson and Jeffrey Archer telling people that Northern Rock is a safe bank.

He insisted that it was OK for him to hide at a great distance and take zoom-lens pictures of people's faces, because they were 'dressing up for the media'. We pointed out that very few people were dressed up, and that if the clowns were just dressing up for the media then they'd likely be doing so at media hour, and be actually near him rather than in the middle of the camp, which, we reminded him, he wasn't welcome in. Why the hell do some journos think that everything people do is for their benefit? Why can't people just dress up for each other, or for themselves, without some nosy scab deciding it's all for his benefit?

If anyone from the Daily Mail or a similar bottom-of-the-barrel publication is reading this, I can assure you that I never have, and never will, do anything for your benefit.

In august 2007, people from all over the UK gathered to protest plans to add a third runway to heathrow airport. Heathrow already produces more CO2 than most countries, and adding more flights at a time when climate change threatens the entire planet is nothing short of madness.

We were joined by locals from the village of Sipson, which is due to disapear under the new runway, with little compensation or consideration for the displaced residents.
