Slow Reading Early Modern Texts and innovations in eLearning: exploring the pedagogy of transcription

The transcription tool is written by the Brock University Centre for Pedagogical Innovation Educational Developer, Michael Brousseau in PHP and is LTI* compliant so it can connect seamlessly to the LMS. Anyone with the instructor role can set up an Assignment and load a scanned pdf. The instructor specifies number of pages to be transcribed and due dates for each of the tasks in the 3 step transcription process. The transcription tool splits the pdfs into number of pages as specifies and allocates two separate batches to each student. Each student transcribes the first set of pages in Task A and another different set of pages in Task B. Once a student has completed both these tasks they can proceed to Task C, where a "diff" compare is presented to them of yet another batch of pages. The student then accepts or edits the trancription to complete the assignment.

The instructor can now verify the accuracy of the final transcription for use in the next phase of the overall assignment where students perform text analysis using Voyant tools voyant-tools.org/

*LTI = Learning tool operability (currently the tool is operating at LTI1.1 for maximum LMS compatibility)

*The tool is released under a creative commons licensed and will be available on GitHub after it’s revision this summer. This course has received funding from the ShOC funding which will make this possible.
