An unflattering observation, not too far off the mark.

 

Whilst Joseph Livesey, the chief founder of the teetotal movement, and several of the public spirited politicians and clergymen who supported the movement had led lives of exemplary sobriety themselves, a great many of the members and propogandists of teetotalism were, in fact, reformed drunkards.
