Sahara camp sunset, Icht, Morocco, 20150923

This place is pretty amazing... So... I love the desert. I don't know why. Everybody wants to get out of the desert, I just want to go in. Problem is... I'm not sleeping out in the desert. You know that program Naked and Afraid? Well, I am afraid! Snakes, scorpions... desert animals. I'm from the city. I just couldn't handle that then (I would probably try it now).

This Borj Biramane camp is in the middle of the Sahara in the South of Morocco. Maybe 50km from the Algerian border and 250km from the Mauritania border. To get there, you drive about 500m East through the sand from the R102 main road, just north of a ghost town called Icht.

So you're out driving in the desert all day and you enter this place. They have build an entire holiday village surrounded by walls! The place is ultra clean and it has plants and it is very well maintained. They have maybe a dozen cabins with beds and... airconditioning! In the Sahara! Airco! Also a small pool. Still no cellphone service and no wifi though and also very little water coming from the shower. I don't know where they keep the power generators but it's absolutely quiet at night!

This is luxury that you would not expect in this part of the world. You can have a good night sleep on a bed in an airconditioned room and charge your electronics... all in the desert.

When I was there it was the end of the Ramadan and there was only a French couple there, no other guests. This is desert land so no Burger King or KFC or any other place to eat anywhere near. You will have to eat the couscous from the house. Man... that was disgusting. The French couple didn't look too happy about the taste either. But you gotta eat right? Breakfast was excellent though and I got a bottle of cold water and a lunch package when I left!

Paradise in the desert. And... cheap!
