140626_A1_Purple Heart Ceremony
Retired Master Sgt. Omar R. Soto was awarded the Purple Heart Medal in a ceremony, June 18, at 18th Fires Brigade Headquarters by Maj. Gen. John W. Nicholson, Jr., 82nd Airborne Division commanding general. Soto received the Purple Heart for action that took place July 29, 2011, while serving in Battery C, 3rd Battalion, 321st Field Artillery Regiment, 18th Fires Brigade, 82nd Abn. Div., as chief of the firing battery. Soto’s unit was deployed to the Pech Valley in Afghanistan at Combat Outpost Honaker-Miracle when it came under hostile small arms and mortar fire late one evening. The COP received four direct hits by a 60mm mortar rounds, one being in close proximity to Soto who suffered wounds as a result of the hostile actions.
