Mom: Wow, look at my hair!

 

Me: Why do you say that?

 

Mom: I don't ever remember it being that high! Or maybe it was up, that's why. Maybe I got it done in some country hair salon.

 

Me: So you thought of Bellmore as country?

 

Mom: Oh, very much so. I mean, nowadays, I look at it and think we were really so close to the city.

 

Me: Was it hard to find places in town that had things you needed?

 

Mom: Yes and no. There was an A&P that was by car less than five minutes away.

 

Me: It's closed, by the way.

 

Mom: Then if you needed anything, there was Roosevelt Field fifteen minutes away. And don't forget, when I was in Brooklyn, I needed at least a half-hour to go downtown to the stores. And then the supermarkets in Brooklyn, they had very small parking lots, so in Bellmore it was very easy to get things you wanted. And you could always go into the town of Bellmore, where they had little clothing stores and things like that.
