Chicago: 29 DEC'75
A South Shore eastbound stops at the depot in "Hegewisch", on the far southeast side of the city. Once the train leaves this station it will cross into Indiana and stop in Hammond next. I spent a lot of time riding these wonderful and solid cars, mostly to and from this stop; a short walk would bring me to the PRR Burnham Tower, where a day would bring trains of South Shore, PRR (or PC later), N&W (former Wabash and former NKP) C&O, EL, Monon, and visits from the "Q" and the "J". There was seldom a moment when there wasn't a headlight in the distance. The ride down through the South Side of Chicago was always an education on how our nation made its living, and the people and industries that made Chicago so vital to the economy.
