DSC_8612-2R2 Bull Elk
This elk (Cervus canadensis) was seen in Rocky Mountain National Park. The elk may be as tall as 5 feet, with a maximum length of 10 feet. The males can weigh as much as 700 pounds, while the females average around 500 pounds. They may have an age of 15 years.
Elk will eat only vegetation, such as grasses, acorns, bark, leaves, grasses, buds.
The National Park Service indicates that elk rarely have more than a single calf. I cannot confirm the sibling situation, but we have seen a scenario where a mother was seemingly caring for two calves. A non-proving photo of the three can be seen on 9/30/2019, in my Yellowstone photos.
