AMX-30B2K

Despite several years of pushback from Ankara, the French-made AMX-30B2 was eventually delivered to the Peshmerga forces made responsible by NATO for the principle fighting against transnational terrorism in and around Al Dabir. Turkey acquiesced to the arming of ethnic-Kurdish forces after it was quietly agreed that the Kurds would not be granted systems deemed too sophisticated or threatening by Ankara. This decision would allow Turkey (and the rest of NATO) to defend its southernmost frontier by proxy while being able to direct regular forces to combat threats posed by Yugoslavia and internal actors. Thus, while the Peshmerga will not be fielding things like the Patriot missile defense system or M6 Jackson anytime soon, they have been gradually building up their stocks of repurposed first- and second-generation main battle tanks. The AMX-30 is yet another example of this ongoing trend.

As such, the AMX-30B2s originally delivered to the Peshmerga have been redesignated as the AMX-30B2K, with the added letter appropriately indicating they belong to Kurdish forces. The K also indicates that the tanks have undergone slight revisions after receiving off-the-shelf upgrades to their fire control systems and fire suppression systems to enhance the tanks' abilities to both deliver and receive damage. Moreover, those B2Ks that were delivered with the BRENUS explosive reactive armor (ERA) kit were slightly elevated to help against buried IEDs and landmines littered throughout Al Dabir. Additionally, the BRENUS models swapped out their low-light television lamp with a secondary ammunition feed for their 20mm coaxial guns. This allows these B2K sub-variants to address more urban threats without needing to fire the 105mm main gun. The focus on urban threats is also reflected in many of the B2Ks sporting gray two-one paint schemes, allowing them to blend into the raw concrete jungle of many developing cities in Al Dabir. Most other baseline models (i.e. those without the BRENUS kit) have been painted tan or adorn in UN white to assist in protecting humanitarian aid deliveries. Overall, while by no means the most sophisticated armored vehicle per contemporary standards, the AMX-30 is still proving to be a versatile family of vehicles.
