Tiger-mimic Queen (Lycorea halia atergatis)
Tiger-mimic Queen (Lycorea halia atergatis), Atenas, Costa Rica
Lycorea sp. belongs to the Milkweed Butterflies (Nymphalidae, Danainae). Similarity with some kind of Heliconius sp. , mostly H. ismenius (Ismenius Longwing or Tiger Heliconian) and Eueides isabella (Isabella Longwing or Isabella's Heliconian), however, these are Heliconiinae. Often there a just called Tiger xy. So you have to be careful with the english names, they are sometimes more confusing then really helping. And ID is also very tricky!
One of the key issues in ID Lycorea sp. are the white spots at/on the head.
